Scammers are getting smarter. Learn how to spot fake calls, texts, and websites so you can keep your money and personal info safe.

How to Protect Yourself from Online Scams

Most of us use our phones to shop, pay bills, or send money. It makes life easier, but it also gives scammers more chances to trick people. Some scams look so real that anyone could fall for them.

Here are the three scams you’re most likely to see and some simple ways to stay safe.

1. The fake bank call

You get a call from someone who says they are from your bank. They know your name and tell you there is a large charge on your card. They ask if it was you.

Most of the time, it is not your bank. It is a scammer trying to make you worry so you share personal details or security codes. Real banks do not call to report charges like that.

What to do:

  1. Do not share any information. Hang up right away.
  2. Call your bank using the number on your card or check directly in your app.
  3. Real agents never ask for passwords or verification codes over the phone.

2. The "you've won" or "account problem" message

A text, email, or WhatsApp message says you won a prize or that your account has a problem. It includes a link that looks safe, but it takes you to a fake website that can steal your information.

What to do:

  1. Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown senders.
  2. Always check who sent the message before you respond.
  3. If you are unsure, go straight to the official website or open the app yourself.

3. The fake website or app

Scammers create websites or apps that look almost identical to real ones. They might offer fake discounts or rewards to get you to sign up. Once you enter your details, they can take your money or personal data.

What to do:

  1. Make sure the website starts with https:// and looks correct.
  2. Only download apps from Google Play or the App Store.
  3. Be careful with deals that seem too good to be true.

Stay safe and aware

You do not need to be a tech expert to protect yourself online. Take a moment to check before you click, share, or answer. That small pause can protect your data and your money.

Share these tips with your friends and family so they can stay safe too.
